Remarkable women: Lindsey Anderson

Meet Lindsey Anderson - she’s the bold proprietor of Six Leaf Design. She helps small businesses stand out with creative website, logo and branding design. Lindsey is a self described “dorky designer” who loves dogs, tacos and Stephen King.

She’s clever, funny and fiercely organized. She has built a successful business through hard work and a strong belief in herself. One of her business products is the one week website which gives businesses that have already laid some groundwork, but need help telling the world what they do, a design wrangler who expertly executes all the important details in 24 hours. Lindsey’s nickname could be magician!

One of the other things that makes Lindsey stand out is her commitment to helping small businesses create efficiency and productivity. Last fall, she co-hosted a workshop for freelancers focused on mastering processes and automation. I’m a big fan of Lindsey’s work, she designed my website. Lucky me, she then hired moi, to take her picture! I’m inspired by women like Lindsey who are talented, resourceful and put their heart and soul into their work.

When you were a kid, did you know you had artistry inside you? How did it manifest?

I don't particularly remember feeling artistic as a kid but I always loved art classes and now looking back I think I was probably more artistic than I thought. I remember loving drawing leaves and filling entire pages with them. I took art classes all throughout middle and high school and college and when I finally took a graphic design class it felt so right like this is what I was supposed to be doing.

How do you stay motivated to keep creating everyday?

Honestly, I don't. Part of making your creative craft a business is that I don't always get to be creative every day.

Some days I'm just doing admin or client work that is more production than creative. Some days when I do get to be creative it seems exhausting (especially with limited time now that we have a toddler to keep happy and entertained). But the best part for me is getting to enjoy the finished product and the motivation comes from knowing that the time and work spent on it will pay off with something awesome.

What creators inspire you?

I've got a handful of other designers who I follow and appreciate their work or the way they run their business. But my favorite creators that I follow online are all illustrators and I have a secret desire to be an illustrator, but I haven't put the time in to get better at it. I love people who share their process and have a dark or sarcastic sense of humor to go with their comics.

What are some of the best lessons you’ve learned along the way in your business?

I heard once "don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle" and that really struck me as true. Really it's all just trial and error. It's all a learning experience and every failure that you have still holds value. So I've tried out tons of different things in my business and it's all just a trial to figure out what will work right now. It's bound to change and evolve though.

If you could name one logo that was your favorite to create what was it and why?

Ha! Honestly, it changes with each new project. A lot of the time my favorite logo is one that I'm working on now or wrapping up. Probably because my work is always getting better and better with every experience. So right now I just launched new branding for The Current Salon & Academy and it's my favorite of all time. But that'll change soon I'm sure.

Favorite font?

I wouldn't say that I have ONE favorite, but I have quite a few go-to fonts that I use as my default. Futura is one of them and it's my main brand font.

Favorite physical art tool?

Pencil and paper

You love tacos - corn or flour tortillas?

100% flour
